Great North Closing Run Oct. 19
Last weekend saw the third GNCR organised by Steve and Val Hughes, supported by Peter and Mary Pattinson, the weekend beginning with a get together meal on Friday night at the hotel, lots of food, drink and chat.
Saturday started with a run to the stunning, and newly opened Windermere Jetty: Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories on the banks of Lake Windermere. Housing many boats from around Windermere it told the stories of boats and boat-building in the area. Actual restoration of boats could also be seen in the live workshop and one of the boat restorers gave a really interesting talk. Many of the group had a trip on the lake in ‘Osprey’, a restored 1902 steam launch. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. Leaving the museum, there was a 40 mile run back to the hotel down some lovely backroads, with stunning views, including a great pit-stop at the ‘Yew Tree Barn’ for tea & cake and a chance to check out some architectural antiques. The day was rounded off with the event dinner with entertainment – a quiz, and jokes from Peter Pattinson!
On Sunday, after heavy rain in the night, everyone gathered in the car park, and, with some trepidation, set off for a run to see a private car collection. There was a diverse range of old cars, many of which had been used for rallying, together with a large collection of motorcycles. Having reminisced and shared experiences, it was time for lunch at the ‘The Shepherd’s Inn’ at Langwathby, followed by a scenic run back to base.
Another great weekend!!
