Wiscombe Park – Double Meeting
7th & 8th May 2017
A double meeting at this lovely venue in the South West of England. Saturday was hosted by the 500 Owners Association while the VSCC ran the Sunday meeting. Two days of competition in pleasant weather and good track conditions too. Five club members competed in a variety of three and four wheelers.
We’re lucky to have some words from two competitors; Cathy Quinn and Sue Darbyshire. Cathy entered the 500 OA event on Saturday and Sue competed on both days. In addition to Cathy and Sue, Pete Enticknap was campaigning his Super Aero and son Ben was out in the GN. Tom Cowley raced his Cooper J.A.P to good effect too.
Cathy enjoyed herself, breaking the 60 second barrier and Sue had a good couple of days, claiming 1st Vintage in Class 14 at the VSCC event.

Three Morgan Three wheelers competed at Wiscombe Park on the weekend of the 6th and 7th of May. On Saturday the sun was shining and it stayed dry but not too hot, so perfect racing conditions. Sue Darbyshire competed in her newly rebuilt car which looked fabulous. She had some problems on Saturday but a better day on Sunday. Pete Enticknap was spectating on Saturday and competed in his lovely JAP Super Aero on Sunday and had a great time despite using Loton gearing already set up on the car. Cathy Quinn was proud to be driving her Matchless Racer, which should know Wiscombe by itself as it has been up there so many times with her Dad! Cathy steadily speeded up all day and managed to break 60 seconds, her fastest time up this hill. Wiscombe is very quick hill with lots going on. Hopefully, next time more Morgans will be willing to give it go, especially when it is part of the Robin Rew Sprint and Hillclimb Series. There were a couple of other Morgan Club members competing with V-twin engines, Ben Enticknap in his GN-JAP and Tom Cowley in his Cooper. |
Sue Darbyshire:
For the first time in many years Wiscombe was dry warm and sunny on both days and this gave us the benefit of a dry track for the whole weekend. We had reverted to the re-built crashed engine for this event whilst the new engine had a couple of minor modifications and this gave us a relatively trouble free weekend, although a broken throttle cable on Saturday at the 500 Owners Club event took us out of the first time run. However I followed it up with a 50.99 on the second run which was good enough for 2nd quickest VSCC time behind the ERA of Julian Wilton. On the VSCC day on Sunday the competition was as fierce as usual despite a number of absentees due to the clash of dates with Vintage Montlhery. Fastest time overall was set by another ERA in the hands of Terry Crabb who was well ahead of the opposition and a number of drivers were challenging for the next places including myself. After the first timed run Greg Lerigo’s new engine proved very quick in his Riley, setting 51.05, followed by Edmund Burgess’ Type 51 Bugatti on 51.17 and myself on 51.21. We all hoped for better on the second run but it was not to be as, due to a spillage of oil on the course no improvement in times was possible so the result stood. Greg was FTD Sports Car, Edmund FTD Pre War and I was FTD Vintage. |
