VSCC Silverstone - 21st-22nd April

Formula Vintage – Round 1 – Silverstone

21 – 22 April 2018

The opening round of the 2018 Formula Vintage Championship took place on the national Circuit of Silverstone over the weekend of 21 and 22 April.  The action packed two day event built upon the history of the traditional Sprint Start Race Meeting and VSCC racing at Silverstone which dates back to April 1949. Two Super Aero Morgan Three Wheelers ventured out to do battle with the big boys.

Two club members were at this two day event; the first round of VSCC’s opening round of the 2018 Formula Vintage Championship. Sue Darbyshire was campaigning her blue Super Aero racer and Simon Edwards, whose car is prepared by George Darbyshire, Sue’s husband, was driving his road-going Super Aero.

Both Morgans were entered in two events. Simon concentrated on the Standard and Modified Pre-War Sports Car class while Sue entered the All-Comers Handicap and the Itala Trophy race against pretty powerful and stiff opposition.

A few words from Sue:

New engine and carbs for Silverstone so very much a test day rather than a race day sorting the set up of the new carbs. It  took us all weekend to get a working setting and it wasn’t perfect. The Itala had a fearsome grid of cars and we were never going to do any good in it . We were therefore happy to finish at all and happy enough with 8th place. More work is still required but early indications are good.

Simon’s car performed very well in the sports car race and he won his class in both races.”

So, after a season of cracked crankcases in 2017, Sue is looking forward to a good year in her blue racing Super Aero.
