Following a 4-year absence, the Vintage Sports-Car Club was delighted to make a highly-anticipated return to the wonderful rolling parkland of Oulton Park over the weekend of 18/19 July.
From Gary Caroline and Sue Darbyshire:
The Bologne Trophy event with a very full entry featured the cream of Vintage racing cars of unlimited capacity. Gary and Duncan qualified very well, Duncan on the 2nd row and Gary on the 4th row. Iain Stewart did not make practice as he had engine trouble. Dave Say had a steady qualifying and was happy to complete practice. In the race 5 very quick cars pulled away and Duncan ran very rapidly in 6th but slightly distanced from the much bigger capacity machinery at the front. Gary was involved in an exciting battle with Charlie Martin (Morgan GN special with fabric body work) and Richard Scaldwell’s JAP powered GN for 7th, 8th and 9th places which Richard got the best of in the end. Dave Say enjoyed his day on the track and retrieved his beetleback on the slowing down lap. Was this a clever plan to shed excess weight?
Sue qualified the black road car on pole position for the sports car race (Event 5) despite not having run it for 6 months. Unfortunately, the throttle cable broke on the first lap of the race.
However main reason for having the road car at Oulton was to do the team relay race at the end of the day. Sue’s team, “Making up the Numbers”, finished 3rd on scratch which they were very happy with. Black car lap times were only 2 seconds shy of Gary’s race laps which pleased Sue. Unfortunately the race was ended prematurely when an Austin 7 tipped over.
The meeting was run using the shorter Fosters circuit (Cutting from Cascades to Knickerbrook). Click on the circuit map for a closer look.
