Lincolnshire’s very own ‘Nurburgring’ again played host to the VSCC’s celebrated Shuttleworth and Nuffield Trophies Race Meeting. Four Three Wheeler Morgans were racing on what turned out to be a warm and sunny summer’s day.

The Words:

From Steve Uprichard.

There were four three wheeler Morgans racing at this prestigious event at the superb Cadwell Park circuit. Race day dawned bright and warm and that’s how it stayed.

Club members Sue Darbyshire, Bill Tuer and Hamish Bibby were racing, as was VSCC member Simon Edwards in the Super Aero prepared and maintained for him by George Darbyshire.

Practice was uneventful with Bill and Hamish getting used to the circuit without the customary chicane and also without passengers. Hamish noted that, without the extra weight, he’d gained another 200 rpm on Park Straight. Greg Bibby was concerned about the fuel capacity of Hamish’s steed – a 15 minute race uses a lot of methanol. Bill mentioned that the plastic circuit markers were spoiling his line through some of the corners. Sue Darbyshire was happy with practice and just hoped that this year’s circuit racing problems would not continue. Simon Edwards was complaining of heavy steering. George suggested a change of wheels and tyres.

Sue was in Race 2 and the Morgan sounded lovely. She finished an excellent 4th behind some very quick opposition, with a fastest lap at 67.72 mph.

Bill and Hamish came out for Race 3. A rather depleted field saw just 8 starters. A poor start by Nick Topliss in ERA R4A saw Freddy Harper away from the line in 1st place which is where he stayed. Bill and Hamish had a good scrap and both finished ahead of some illustrious cars, including ERA R7B. Their fastest lap times were identical at 69.76 mph.

Simon Edwards did well in his first Morgan race at Cadwell, finishing mid-field in an entry of 24 cars.
