Lots happening..

First events of this year

Once the season starts it’s difficult to keep up with updates about Morgans flexing their muscles on the circuits and hills.   So far we’ve had the season opener at VSCC Silverstone reported on by Fin Camerson plus VSCC Curborough.  Last weekend we had the 500 Owners Association Wiscombe Park with five Morgans competing and the VSCC event the following day.  If I’ve got time, I’ll do a report for the website in the next few days.

Curborough – 6 & 7 June

Our own Curborough weekend now only three weeks away.

Saturday

The line-up of historic competition Morgans is looking good.  Cathy has all the details, but I can give you a few tasters.

How about the first public appearance for a long time of Yellow, Henry Laird’s double gold ISDT medal winner?  Many thanks to owner Alistair Hibbert for arranging his son Matthew to bring it.  Alistair also owns the ex-Colonel Hicks Brooklands Super Aero which will be there too.  Not only that, but Matthew will be entering the sprint on Sunday.  Surely this is the first occasion that Yellow has been run in competition since its glory days.

And Satan is coming too.  No, not Lucifer himself but a lovely early Super Aero called Satan that was sprinted at Madresfield in the early 1950s, owned by Derek Evans, a Morgan factory employee.  It’s now owned, quite appropriately, by Bill Beck another ex-MMC employee.  I’ve seen it once at a Daffoldil Run many years ago and it’s a joy to behold.

It’s not just about in-period cars.  One 1970s racer that’s recently been fired up is Stephen Wickers’ beetleback SS MX4 raced 50+ years ago by Phil Kennedy.  When Phil stopped racing to focus on the manufacture of the Kennedy Squire, the Morgan was bought by Stephen’s father.  It has now had the cobwebs blown away with Stephen running it at VSCC events at Prescott, Curborough and at the recent 500 OA and VSCC Wiscombe hillclimbs.  There are still a few teething issues such as a reluctance to fire cleanly on both cylinders.  Stephen’s friend and co-driver at Curborough, Brett Gregson is on the case, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed that the bugs will be ironed out by early June.

And then there’s the Camerons.  We’re not sure that Ewan & Co will conjure up, but it’s certain to be exciting.  Maybe it will be the ex-Cyril Hale racer developed by Cyril pre-war from an MX4 SS to the first JAP 8/80 on a Morgan, via a big accident at Oulton Park in the late 1950s.  Of course Morgans are never a total write-off.  Cyril rebuilt it in the late 1970s and it has had an illustrious history since, notably raced extensively by previous Competition Secretary Phil Spencer.   Or maybe Ewan will bring the ex-Les Bolton drop tank special with Morgan suspension and a blown 500cc Triumph twin engine behind the driver.?  You’ll have to come along to Curborough to find out.

Sunday

The entry list for the annual club twisty sprint is looking very positive.  As of today, we have 35 Morgan entries plus one motorcycle.  It’s really pleasing that several of the Morgans are being double driven, showing a generosity of sprit that makes the MTWC such a great one-make club.

Not entered???  You really are missing out.  The closing date was 15 May, but our kind hearted comp Sec might accept a late entry.  Regs and entry forms a attached.  £90 fee, but £45 for first timers and under 30s.

Coming up….

Special Race

Fin Cameron has arranged with the VSCC for a combined 500s and 3-wheel Morgan race at Cadwell Park on Saturday 20 June for MS(UK) licence holders.  Should be interesting, the 500s are really quick.

Hillclimbs

It’s busy, busy busy….

Sat 27 June – Barbon Manor.  Run by the Westmorland Motor Club. This is a really friendly event (as all bike hillclimbs are).  Short course with a tricky right hander towards the end.  Lovely countryside.  Regs and entry forms should be available on the Westmorland Motor Club’s web site

Sat 4 July – NHCA Shelsley Walsh.  This all bike event is in its 4th year and gets better and better.  It’s become quite a favourite with the MTWC competitors with increasing numbers each year.   Regs and entry form attached.  Closing Date: Sat 6 June

Sat 18 July – NHCA Loton Park.  This is a new all-bike event.  NHCA are keen to have sufficient entries to make this a viable annual event.  Unfortunately it was notified to us after the calendar had been agreed, so it clashes with BHR Darley Moor on 18 & 19 which is a Challenge Series Round.  Darley Moor is likely to attract four or five entries at a guess, so it would be good if some of our occasional competitors could make the effort to enter Loton.

Why not make a weekend of it?  The Sundays 5th and 19th July at Shelsley and Loton are the VSCC hillclimbs and there are going to be some Morgans entered among the VSCC heavy metal.

I may be missing out on other events, invitations and so on.  Happy to receive more information, snippets etc to include
