The Not a Night Trial – Night Trial
The Words:
from one of the organisers – Danny Hodgson:
Starting from Rowsley Village Hall 12 Competitors gathered at around 4pm and were given a bag containing two tie wraps, a length of wire, a length of string, two felt tip pens, a map and an egg.
With some confused looks, the competitors began plotting the route on the maps. The planned route would allow our competitors to take in the picturesque sights of the Peak District. At just after 5pm the competitors left the car park, maps in hand, ready for the 63 miles of winding, twisty roads ahead of them.
After crawling up the long winding road out of Rowsley, the drivers and passengers came to the first Checkpoint, where a large 4×4 with a flashing light and 2 marshals in Hi-vis were waiting. The first competitors John & Jackie Scruton happily drove past whilst waving at the marshals! The first challenge had they have stopped to find out was to decorate the egg that was in the bag they were given at the start! A few minor mishaps with the eggs later, the competitors arrived at Checkpoint 2 where the challenge was to attach their egg to the outside of the vehicle using only the items within the bag provided.
Other challenges included; driving along a zig zag path, assembling a childs toy at speed, rolling a tyre through gates, and guessing the number of items in a jar.
All compeititors arrived at Edale Village Hall for Soup and Sandwiches at around 9pm where on inspection only 5 eggs had safely arrived. A short drive back to Rowsley Village hall took in the sights of Hathersage, and the Deer at Chatsworth House. There was a short presentation at Rowsley Village Hall before everyone left.
It was the first night trial that I have been involved in where there were very few mechanical issues! I would like to thank everyone who took part; the Marshals and everyone who helped at the event. We hope that you all enjoyed it.
The overall winners were Steve Lister and Ruth Ross and the full results are shown below.
