Chris Strachan’s very early original F4 engine, complete with, bolt through main bearing caps, all very simple under the bonnet. Early Ford engines had the white metal main bearings cast directly into the block and the caps were retained by bolts. You can see the square heads of the two rear bolts behind the cylinder block on top of the clutch housing adjacent to the starter motor in Chris’ picture. Later engines, from about 1936 had conventional shell bearings with the caps retained by studs and nuts in the normal way. |
